Blue Plate Taco is so ideally located on Ocean Street on the main level of the Shore Hotel. As we walked up to the restaurant at first glance the restaurant appeared bare, and plain. The Oceanside location allows the restaurant to be what it is – a glorified version of a taco truck. But by glorified I don’t by any means mean to downplay the quality of the food but to highlight that the lack of accentuation in the venue allows the food to shine much like one would expect to receive when standing in line to order food from a taco truck.
We approached the front door and were told there would be a wait time to get a table so we sat at the bar for a quick drink. Their margarita selection is quite unique and very tasty. Once our table was ready we were escorted to a small little table in the far corner, but it just seemed appropriate – the kind of place where everyone sits shoulder to shoulder which allows you to feed off other people’s energy. In fact as the two ladies beside us received their pitcher of sangria we felt excited about it too.
But let’s focus on the food. The tortilla chips were fresh no doubt. With it came a red and a green salsa, both so flavourful, and mouthwatering…although the latter could knock your sox off.
What’s refreshing about Blue Plate Taco is that it is not trying to modernize the traditional taco or to add some fusion. We ordered salmon tacos, we got salmon tacos with fresh Mexican ingredients. It serves honest to goodness Mexican tacos with the finest fundamental ingredients. And for that I’d say they served the most wonderful tacos I’ve had in California so far!
